The terms health and wellness are commonly used interchangeably, but there are differences. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
According to the WHO, wellness is ” the optimal state of health of individuals and groups.” The WHO considers two focal concerns: the realization of the fullest potential of an individual physically, psychologically, socially, spiritually, and economically, and the fulfillment of one’s role expectations in the family, community, place of worship, and workplace.
Achieving wellness is ongoing and ever-evolving, a lifestyle that should not change because you are traveling.
Maintaining the perfect balance between wellness and having too much fun while on vacation is tricky. You don’t have to leave behind all of that hard work in the gym, in the kitchen, and your soul once you set off to travel the world. Add these wellness products for travel to your packing list so you can make wellness a priority without sacrificing the excitement of experiencing the world.
Whether you’re a newbie like me or a super-fan, essential oils are a natural way to remedy multiple ailments and comfort issues while traveling.
- Lavender ~ Multi-use lavender, for jetlag, anxiety, sleep, relaxation. Spray lavender on your pillow at night to help you relax and fall asleep. You can also do the same during long-haul flights, spritz your blanket or pillow (or both).
- Coconut oil ~ Versatile coconut oil, Use as a makeup remover, moisturizer, for chapped lips, and a detangler for your hair. And the scent is delicious.
- Ginger Essential Oil ~ For upset tummy and motion sickness.
- Peppermint Oil ~ Headaches and hangovers. I linked to the roll-on delivery method as it is easy to use on your temples and shoulders when you experience tension.
- Citronella ~ A natural alternative to insect repellents that use DEET as their primary ingredient.
- Eucalyptus ~ Eucalyptus oil, another natural bug repellent.
- Lemon Essential Oil ~ Another multi-use essential oil, used to freshen the air, for acid indigestion and heartburn. My dad always mixed lemon oil, hot water, and honey for me to soothe a sore throat. I am quite sure he slipped a little bourbon in there, too. And one more thing, bugs hate the smell of lemon.
- Tea Tree Oil ~ Used as an antiseptic for minor wounds, insect repellent, and lice ( I had to use it for this once, yuk).

2) For your flight
Pack a small pouch (like this one) and stock with these goodies: hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturizer, and chapstick. I pack these face sheets, too, for an impromptu in-flight facial. My daughter loves this (my husband, too).
3) Travel First Aid Kit ~ You can purchase a first aid kit from Amazon, or DIY with these items.
4) Travel Journal ~ Incorporate journaling into your travel day, especially gratitude.
5) Gym clothes ~ Use for your morning walk, hike, bike ride, and maybe even exploring the town.
7) Lightweight exercise gear ~ Pack your jump rope, yoga mat, and resistance bands.
8) Healthy snacks. ~ Here is a list of nut-free/healthy-ish snacks for when you are on the go.
9) Reusable water bottle with filter. ~ The LifeStraw Go Water Bottle is a durable, 23-ounce, leak-proof water bottle with a filter that removes 99.9% of waterborne protozoan parasites without chemicals, iodine, or batteries (per Amazon).
10) Noise-canceling headphones for all. ~ My teenage daughter calls these family canceling headphones; she’s super sweet most of the time.
11) Blanket scarf, my kids bring their hoodies. Or the World’s Best Fleece Travel Blanket.
12) Cozy socks or compression socks.
13) Melatonin, the sleep hormone, is helpful for sleep and the effects of jet lag. This is the liquid version that I use for my kids.
14) A good novel or Kindle Paperwhite. I prefer holding a hardback book. However, the Kindle Paperwhite has a ton of new features: it is now waterproof, the battery lasts weeks, not hours, and you can pair it with Bluetooth headphones or speakers to listen to your story.
15) Sunblock and insect repellent with DEET or without (this one can be used on the pups, too).
Here are a few quick travel tips: How to make wellness a priority without sacrificing fun.
Immersing yourself into a vibrant culture, the food, the drinks, the music, the people is the joy of travel, and this is not a bad thing. Do these things and be the best wellness traveler you can be.
Move Your Body.
- Do something active with your family every day. I don’t mean to pack your day and completely exhaust your family and yourself. Then no one will like you. It’s happened to me more than once. Just make sure that part of your day involves movement. Think kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, horseback riding, bike riding, or walking.
- The best mode of transportation is to walk. Walking is the best way to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, scents, and feels of a city.
- Pack your gym clothes. Buy some new outfits for your trip; new stuff always makes you feel good.
- Ninja tip: Wear your running shoes on travel day.
- Bring a yoga mat. There are plenty of fold-up options that fit snugly in your luggage.
- Bring along a jump rope and resistance bands for fitness.
- Here are a few hotel room workouts that you can do anywhere, and you don’t need equipment.
Nutrition.
- Pack healthy snacks (Dried fruit, power bars, pretzels)
- Shop for a few pre-made healthy breakfasts and leave in the fridge. Greek yogurt with berries and granola. Premade oatmeal that only requires hot water. Power bars. Fruit. These can also double as a nighttime snack.
- Here is a list of nut-free/healthy-ish snack ideas for travel.
Hydrate.
- Carry a Refillable Water Bottle. Sip on it all day.
- Avoid too many caffeinated beverages.
- Drink alcohol in moderation.
Relax.
- Meditate.
- Journal.
- Read a book.
- Spend time sitting outdoors in peace.
- Grab a glass of Champagne and chill (my personal favorite).
Get your sleep.
- Continue your nighttime ritual while on vacation. Take a shower or bath, put on your PJs, cozy socks and a hoodie, write in your journal, read a book, be quiet, and peaceful.
- Avoid too much alcohol as this can interfere with restorative sleep and leave you tired the next day.
- Spritz your pillow with lavender.
- Sip on Chamomile Tea.
- Keep your room cool (between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Use Melatonin if necessary.

Here is a checklist so you don’t forget any of your wellness products for travel.
It is tempting to indulge in new experiences and new places, but it can be tiring and take a toll on your physical and emotional energy. Maintaining wellness is absolutely possible with a few travel wellness products and quick and simple tips, plus merely living it up in moderation.
I will have to check out that yoga mat. I had to buy one in Israel, because I didn’t want to pack one. It wasn’t a regular one…LOL it was more like the foam that makes a pool noodle – but I used it. It’s best purpose was to wrap bottles of wine we packed to bring back home!!!
Whatever it takes to keep the wine safe!
This is such a great list and reminder! Wellness shouldn’t just disappear when we travel. Vacations are amazing, but the traveling part can be so stressful. Stress paralyzes our immune systems, so it’s so important to maintain wellness while traveling.
And those noise-canceling headphones- I need those for everyday life in my home 😂
I am serious. I do, too. Those headphones…
Great reminders and tips. I am just getting into essential oils and love Lavender. I really need to get a good travel first aid kit together, something I overlook and have to wing it when we suddenly need something.
I have one all put together and ready to go. Create one, and then just check all of the expiration dates before you leave.
Definitely love the lightweighted travel yoga mat idea!! Cool sharing
Yes, always travel with one. It’s helpful in the rooms, too, so you can stretch without touching the dirty floors.
These are great tips, and I love your travel kit for the flight! I’ve never put one together specifically for flying because we drive so much for our trips, but I do think a road trip kit would be really useful, too.
Agree, I think road tripping is going to be the thing for a while, so I guess I need to create a road trip kit!
This is a great article and very helpful with good ideas. I am so bad about not paying as much attention to my help when traveling. This made me want to look more into essential oils. Thanks!
I am a newbie with essential oils, learning a ton and I absolutely love them.
I love rocky mountain oils and always bring immune strength and a mini diffuser for the hotel! It’s a must for me to have a plane pack with everything you mentioned, and I also bring lotion and my own tea bags for calmness and relaxation. It’s amazing how refreshing it is to have little products like that on a long haul flight 🙂
I agree. It is calming and kind of pampering. I have learned over the years that the more I am at peace, the more the family is at peace. It is not necessarily the other way around.
This is so informative, I love essential oils but have not idea what most of them do, thank you.
Me, too. I have learned so much over the past year or so about essential oils. I wish I had known earlier.
These are great tips! I love to travel but usually feel bad when I get back because of all the stress I’ve put on my body and being out of routine. I’ll have to incorporate some of these things.
Sounds like you need a little help. I hope next time you travel, you come back relaxed and revived.
Thanks for this helpful reminder to care for my health while traveling. During my last trip I definitely learned a lot about the importance of self-care while traveling. I noticed citronella on your list, and I actually just got a bottle of that. How do you use it/apply it as a bug spray?
Yes, I put about 10-15 drops per ounce of water in a little spray bottle and spritz it on like bug spray. You can also dilute it in a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil, about 5-6 drops per two teaspoons of carrier oil. And if you are outside and you have access to an electrical plug, you can use a diffuser.
OMG ! your wee lists are terrific! .. I’m such a planner and have multiple wee bags in my carry on with ALL the essentials.. your lists will be super helpful ONCE our borders reopen (I’m in New Zealand)
Things are opening up, slowly. Be safe. And I love checklists, as you can see. Then I don’t forget anything, well, most of the time, I don’t forget anything.
Love this! and the checklist is super useful. Saving it for my next trip 🙂
Awesome, now if we could only go somewhere!
You’ve really covered the bases. I’m a fan of candied ginger and travel with it for migraine nausea — and it’s lovely in tea, too. I also bring old prescription bottles to collect small items from my travels. Small pebbles, seeds, and other tiny finds are kept safe this way. Happy travels!
Same to you. I have used ginger candies, too. I have tried it all for motion sickness. Ginger really helps in any form.
These are fantastic tips! I can’t stress enough how important noise-canceling headphones are for me. Sometimes we just need to tune out everything & everyone. I pinned this.
That is the truth. All of us, especially mom.
I think you are a much better prepared traveller than me – there are a lot of things on that list I don’t usually carry with me… but I do admit that when Covid rolled around, my first preparations were to order essential oils and a diffuser. Come at me rona, I’m ready!
Yes, I think COVID has me doing things differently, too.
I definitely need to try those essential oils! I visit family in the south of France a few times a year and last summer I got absolutely eaten alive by mosquitos!
I know the feeling, they swarm me here in Florida.
Great list! I hadn’t thought of the essential oils but I’m definitely going to try them! 🙂
Yes, I am hooked. There are several that I never travel without. And truly use them daily at home.
This is an awesome list! I never go anywhere without my meltonin.
Yes, agree 100%. Sleep is underrated and can be tough while traveling.
I love this list of essential oils to use for a number of things while traveling. Perhaps you could also add to this list: apple cider vinegar chews, as well as vitamin c chews to boost immunity while traveling especially to combat viruses on long flights and sharing the same air on planes, trains, buses etc. They are small to pack, and yummy tasting!
Yes, I love this idea. And, in this day and age, so important to boost the immunity any way we can.
Excellent tips! I especially love the travel journal. Thank you for sharing!
I do, too. It is one of my favorite things, I wish I could get the kids into journaling, but they’re teens and you know how that goes.
