Why choose London for your family vacation? Where do I begin?

“Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London.  No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”

Samuel Johnson.
London Family Vacation

What he meant by this statement is the experiences of a London family vacation are infinite, the city is addicting, and you won’t want to leave. London is beautiful everywhere you look, filled with history, culture, food, haunts, and royalty. The sites and sounds are stimulating; it’s no wonder to me why London is one of the most famous cities in the world to visit for a family vacation.

It is a bonus that London is super easy to navigate, and there are plenty of free activities for all ages and tastes. Our seven-day London family vacation was full of fun, but it only left me yearning to return for more.

How to navigate the city of London on Your Family Vacation.

London is easy to navigate whether you are on foot, tube, boat, or bus. Try them all, each with their individual beauty.

Walking in London.

Walking is free, healthy, and environmentally friendly. Plus, walking provides a more intimate immersion into your surroundings. You will be surprised how much ground you can cover on foot in London. And you may likely beat the traffic.

There are many websites that list self-guided walking tours of London.

  • 22 Self-Guided Walking Tours in London ~ Download the app “GPSmyCity: Walks in 1K+ Cities” from iTunes App Store or on Google Play to your mobile phone or tablet. Each walk comes with a tour map, photos, and information for the attractions. The app includes a navigation function to guide you from one attraction to the next. The app works offline, so no data plan is needed when traveling overseas.
  • Walk London ~ Each walk includes an interactive map that consists of a variety of places to stop to eat, drink or have a seat and take in the view. You can pick a route that will take you 30 minutes or a journey that will take you all day. Cover it all on foot; history, royalty, culture, cuisine, parks, and monuments.
  • City Walks ~ This website provides a downloadable PDF map, which I love so I can scribble!
  • Rick Steves London 2020 ~ Rick Steves travel guides are my go-to. This book is all you need, and there is a pullout map included.

Learn The Tube.

Also known as The London Underground (not to be confused with the Subway), The Tube is the best way to rest your feet and cover some ground simultaneously. The tube is open from 5 AM until midnight, with night time services on some lines on the weekends.

Purchase an Oyster Card before your visit to London to get the best value on The Tube (using cash is more expensive). Activate the card upon entry at a ticket barrier in the tube stations. Tap in on the circular yellow card reader and tap out again when you finish your journey. Easy as that.

London Family Vacation
Oyster card and tube map

If you buy a London Pass with the Travel Package (I will get to that later), your electronic Oyster Card will arrive pre-loaded with credit to match your London Pass duration.  Children under 11 years of age can travel for free on London Transport with an Adult holding a valid Oyster Card. Children between 11 – 15 with a 1, 2, 3, and 6 day London Pass + Travel package will receive a Paper Travelcard, not an Oyster Card.

Tips for efficient travel on The Tube.

  • Mind the gap! You won’t forget this statement, I promise.
  • Wait for people to leave the train before you jump in.
  • Use the right side of the escalators.
  • Make sure to check the front of the train for the correct destination.
  • Hold onto the rails if you are standing during your journey.
  • Offer your seat to the frail, elderly, pregnant, or even those with children.
  • Don’t stand in the doorway of the train.
  • Keep quiet. Seriously, people are silent on The Tube. And they keep to themselves.
  • Last, but not least, DON’T STARE. This unspoken rule should apply anywhere you go. However, in London, some sites are curious. LOOK AWAY!

The London Pass comes with a travel package option. By adding an Oyster Travelcard, you will have access to The Tube, buses, Docklands Light Rail, and overground trains.

What else does the London Pass include?

23 Top Activities to Add to Your London Family Vacation Itinerary.

1) Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace.

When I tell people that I recently traveled to London, guess what they want to know?  Exactly, did you see the Changing of the Guards?

The short answer is “sort of.”  The long answer is this.

We strolled through St. James Park to Buckingham Palace to “see” the changing of the guard. I am sure you have heard that every visitor to London should experience Changing of the Guards at least once.

We arrived 45 minutes before the guard change, which takes place at precisely 11 AM, and turns out to be a 45-minute ceremony.  Well, so did a trillion other people. We stood across the street from the gate; however, we were unable to see the actual guard change.

The new guards marched in with the band, which was fun, then the kids could not take the crowd any longer and wanted to leave.   As we turned around to vacate our spot, there were people lined up about ten rows back, a bit overwhelming to get through the crowd.

The new guards marching into Buckingham Palace, London
London Family Vacation

Short of showing up two hours early to get a front-row spot in front of the gate, I am not sure how I would plan this differently with the kids.

So…the answer to the most often asked question about our London trip is this, “we were at Buckingham Palace when the Guards changed!”

Fun Fact: The Queen still lives at Buckingham Palace, although not year-round. The Royal Standard is flown at the Palace when the Queen is present. If the Union Flag is flying, you know that she is not there.

2) Tour Westminster Abbey.

The history, the architecture, the worship, and the ceremony at Westminster Abbey is a must.

London Family Vacation
Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a Gothic church in Westminster, London, that is the spot of the coronation of every English and British Monarch since 1066. The Abbey, a London Icon, was founded over one thousand years ago, with origins dating to the 960s/970s.

The Abbey is the burial site of kings and queens, writers, politicians, actors, and scientists.

London Family Vacation
Westminster Abbey

Dr. Stephen Hawking’s ashes were interred in the Abbey between those of Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton during the summer of 2018.  Weddings have taken place at the Abbey, including the most famous wedding of William and Kate.  The funerals of Winston Churchill and Princess Diana took place at the Abbey.

Entry times for Westminster Abbey are from 9:30-3:30. The London Pass will afford you free entry into Westminster Abbey. Otherwise, the admission fee is 45 pounds (which equals about $64 US Dollars) for two adults and two children. Westminster Abbey tickets can be purchased ahead of time online.

Not So Fun Fact: They do NOT allow personal photography inside Westminster Abbey.

A complimentary multimedia guide is available at the Abbey. You can either download the app to your smartphone before you arrive or use the device and headphones provided when you visit. The guide includes a map and separate recordings of information for each site of importance.

I could have stayed at the Abbey all day, but my kids, especially the ten-year-old, could not have possibly tolerated that. We managed about two hours with the kids.

So many highlights in the Abbey, including The Grave of the Unknown Warrior, the Memorial to Winston Churchill, the Chapel of St. Edward the Confessor, and the tomb of Henry V. The elaborate tomb of Elizabeth I was our favorite, beautiful in white marble, dressed in jewels.  Simply stunning.  Mary Queen of Scots lies to rest here, too.

Multiple literary figures are buried at Westminster Abbey.

Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Robert Browning, Thomas Hardy, and Rudyard Kipling are buried in the Poet’s Corner.  Other authors who have been commemorated at the Abbey include William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and the Bronte Sisters.   Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin are buried at the Abbey.

And don’t forget to stop by the Coronation Chair on your way out. This chair has been used at every Coronation since Henry IV in the 14th Century.

3) Now for something dark and spooky: Tour The London Dungeon.

Some say The London Dungeon is something that can be skipped. Yes, it is dark and macabre and discusses serial killers and ladies of the night, but I liked it. My kids thought it was fun, plus it was located directly next door to our hotel. If you enjoy this type of attraction, go for it.

Fun Fact: The police never caught Jack the Ripper.

4) Go on a walking Ghost Tour.

While on the subject of spooky, let’s take a ghost tour. Again, this is not for everyone; our kids happen to love this type of activity. Tour the city and learn the history and haunts with London Walks.

We met Richard, our quirky tour guide, who took us on a two hour Walking Ghost Tour through the Alleys around Bank Underground.  Fun seeing the city this way, however, no ghosts spotted, that we know of.  My son loves a spooky ghost story, so we did this on his behalf.  He enjoyed the eerie darkness and the possibility of an orb sighting, and we enjoyed the history.

5) Learn public transportation.

The London Underground is the quickest, easiest, and most efficient way to make your way around the city. Plus, it will give your legs a rest.

London Family Vacation

Or hop on the Big Bus B, grab an open-top seat, sit back and enjoy the sites. There are four routes depending on where you want to go. The Red Tour Buses have guides to give you some history and tips. Hop on and hop off as you wish at multiple landmarks.

6) Time for some history.

Did you know that London has over 170 museums and many include free entry?

  • Natural History Museum ~ Our favorite so far. With dinosaur skeletons and whale models, this museum is spectacular.
  • British Museum ~ Highlights include the Rosetta Stone and Parthenon Sculptures
  • Tate Modern ~ Here, you will find world-class paintings and photographs. Don’t miss the stunning view of the river from the gallery’s cafe.
  • Museum of London ~ Learn the history of the city through interactive displays. Follow the evolution of London from prehistoric times through the Middle Ages and the Victorian era, up to the present day.
  • Victoria and Albert Museum ~ Learn about the history of creativity through fashion, jewelry, sculpture, and photography.
  • HMS Belfast (free for kids < 16) ~ The most significant surviving Second World War Royal Navy warship. The kids can explore all nine decks of HMS Belfast to discover what life was like onboard for the crew at war and at sea. Free entry for kids under 16 years old.
  • The National Gallery ~ From da Vinci to Degas, The National Gallery holds one of the most impressive collections of art throughout the ages.

7) Walk over a famous bridge.

London Family Vacation
Tower Bridge

Stroll across Tower Bridge (not to be confused with London Bridge), a majestic structure built in 1894. Take in stunning views of the river as well as the most popular sites in London: St. Paul’s Cathedral, The London Eye, Canary Wharf. The massive steam-powered pumps used to open the bridge are still present, although the bridge-opening system was electrified in 1974.

8) St. Paul’s Cathedral.

The great Renaissance architect, Christopher Wren spent nearly 40 years building St. Paul’s Cathedral, with a dome weighing in at 64,000 tons, and Europe’s largest crypt.

London Family Vacation
St. Paul's Cathedral

The cool part for kids when touring St. Paul’s Cathedral is the quirky whispering room where you can throw a whisper around the walkway. Whispers on one side can be heard on the opposite side, nearly 170 feet away.

Climb and count the steps to the top of the dome (there are 528, by the way). If you make it to the top, the view of the city of London is breathtaking.

9) Stroll Through Hyde Park.

London is considered one of the greenest cities in the world. Hyde Park, set right in the heart of London and the largest park in London, was our favorite. Take your time walking through the park on your way to Kensington Palace (next on the list to add to your London itinerary).

Kayaking, swimming, rollerblading, jogging, riding horses, having picnics: all in a day in Hyde Park.

Princess Diana Memorial Fountain London.
Kids were swimming in this fountain when we visited. It was 55 degrees F outside, way too cold for this Floridian to go for a swim.

10) Tour a Royal Palace.

Kensington Palace, the home of kings and queens for centuries, was redesigned by Christopher Wren for William and Mary in 1689. Kensington Palace in Hyde Park was once the home of Princess Diana.

London Family Vacation
Kensington Palace

The entry fee to Kensington Palace for adults is 14 pounds (about $20), and for children under 16 years old is 7.20 pounds (about $10). You can tour the Palace at no fee with your London Pass. The hours of operation of Kensington Palace are from 10 AM to 5 PM.  A small line awaited us when we arrived with minimal wait time to enter.

The tour includes exhibits of the King and Queen’s State Apartments, including the Grand Staircase to the King’s State Apartment (impressive). The King’s gallery was full of paintings, sculptures, and even an exquisite painted ceiling.

And then the gardens.

London Family Vacation.
The Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace.

11) Grab a cheeseburger and a pint at the original Hard Rock Cafe.

The Hard Rock Café has been on Old Park Lane since 1971, right outside of Hyde Park. The restaurant is covered in Rock and Roll Memorabilia and has a vault that you can tour after you eat with even more memorabilia.

I was super excited to see a tribute to Bo Diddley on the wall in the main restaurant. He is from the area where we live, and we have a plaza in downtown Gainesville renamed for him in 2008.

Funny story about Bo Diddley.

I was in the Gainesville Regional Airport back in the day when they were beginning to require ID. Remember when we only needed a ticket to get on a plane?  Bo Diddley was boarding, and they were giving him trouble because he did not have identification.  He kept telling them, “I’m Bo Diddley,” over and over.  They would not let him on.  Finally, he turned around and asked all of the passengers waiting impatiently in line, “Who am I?”  We all said, “Yep, He is Bo Diddley!”  He flew with us that day.

12) You must experience afternoon tea (and you may need to splurge).

Our experience with Afternoon Tea at Sketch Restaurant and Gallery in London was unforgettable — an unexpected adventure that I would love to share with you.

I did my usual obsessive research to try to find a unique, family-friendly restaurant that would not only be delicious, but a unique experience for all to remember. Sketch Restaurant and Gallery in Mayfair kept coming up in my search, especially on Instagram.  Precisely what I was looking for.

London Family Vacation
Afternoon Tea at Sketch London

I am quite sure there is no place like Sketch.

Upon walking into Sketch Gallery, I immediately understood why I had seen so many pictures and posts about this place. Wow. It was VERY PINK…it was MAGICAL. The lighting, the pink tulip seats, the walls, the Champagne. All PINK.

Very campy, over the top décor, but somehow sophisticated, tasteful and elegant at the same time.

There are quirky framed sketches all over the walls, many with witty and sometimes absurd quotes and poems.  Very curious.  It made me feel kind of giggly, happy and excited that I found this fun place for my family.

13) Visit fabulous street markets.

  • Camden Market ~ Likely one of London’s top attractions, Camden Market brings in about 100,000 visitors every weekend. Eclectic clothes and gifts, plus a foodie’s paradise for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
  • Portobello Road Market ~ Huge antique market located in Notting Hill (yep, the neighborhood where the movie was filmed).
  • Covent Garden Market ~ A serious shopping destination, Covent Garden Market, is full of handmade crafts and antiques.
  • Borough Market ~ In operation for 1000 years, Borough Market is another foodie’s paradise located next to London Bridge.
  • Greenwich Market ~ Arts and crafts, food, and fashion market located in Greenwich within a World Heritage Site.
  • Southbank Center Food Market ~ Featuring food from all over the globe.
  • Southbank Book Market ~ An outdoor book market, located under the Waterloo Bridge and continuing along the Thames.

14) Attend a sporting event.

Catch a football match, rugby game, tennis, or cricket match at a world-famous venue in London; think Wimbledon, Wembley Stadium, and the Millennium Dome.

15) See the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.

London Family Vacation
Tower of London

The Tower of London is a 900 years old fortress located in Central London on the banks of the River Thames.

The Tower has had multiples uses.

  • The housing of the Crown Jewels ~ The jewels worn by the Monarch at coronation; they wouldn’t let me take a picture.
  • Royal Residence.
  • Barracks for troops.
  • Holding for many infamous prisoners ~ Lady Jane Grey, Edward, and Richard (sons of Henry IV), Anne Boleyn, and Katherine Howard (wives of Henry VIII), Guy Fawkes (the man accused of attempting to blow up the House of Lords).

Fun Fact: A flock of six ravens lives at the Tower. According to the Tower of London website, legend says that the Tower — and the monarchy — will fall if the six ravens ever leave the fortress.

16) Learn a new language, well, kind of.

There was a language barrier that I did not expect.  So much so that we started collecting words and phrases. Here is our list.

  • the tube or underground=subway
  • way out=exit
  • lift=elevator
  • chips=French Fries
  • sparkling lemonade=Sprite

  • bank holiday=legal holiday (ex. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in London)
  • bumbag=fanny pack
  • jumper=sweater
  • lorry=truck
  • pint=beer
  • saloon (car)=sedan

17) See a musical at a famous historic theatre.

We booked tickets for Wicked at The Apollo Victoria Theatre. The whole family loved it. There are so many shows to choose from, including The Lion King, Thriller, School of Rock, Mama Mia, Phantom of the Opera. And there are multiple websites for booking.

18) Lunch in a pub.

Reserve a table for a quintessential pub lunch at the Lamb and Flag, one of the oldest pubs in London. A traditional English pub said to be one of the oldest pubs in London at about 400 years old.  A favorite pub of Charles Dickens, once known as the Bucket Of Blood due to its history of bare-knuckle fights.

On Easter, we dined on Fish and Chips, cheeseburger, roasted chicken, and salmon with chorizo and chickpeas in a tomato-based sauce. And an ice-cold pint, of course. Oh, and some chocolate Easter eggs.

19) A dose of hot whiskey or hot mulled wine.

We have food trucks where we live, but I have never seen such a glorious sight as a Hot Whiskey Truck. I am still dreaming of my daily visits. This particular truck is parked in Southbank, close to the London Eye.

Mom and hot whiskey in London

20) Visit the neighborhoods.

  • Kensington ~ Home to a royal palace, sensational green space (Hyde Park), and three of the city’s best museums: the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
  • Soho ~ Entertainment mecca with theatres, record stores, coffee shops, and restaurants serving food from all over the world.
  • Covent Garden ~ Located next to Soho and similar in style with world-class shopping AND eating.
  • Shoreditch ~ Known for hipster bars, street art, trendy shops, and home to Spitalfields Market.
  • Camden ~ Thriving music scene, bustling market, foodie’s paradise, and beautiful parks.
  • Southwark ~ Home of Borough Market, Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, and The Shard.
  • Nottinghill ~ Streets lined with colorful townhouses (just like the 90’s movie) and home to Portobello Road Market.
  • Greenwich ~ The center of Greenwich is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Green, rich in Maritime history, and a sweeping view of the London Skyline.
  • Westminster ~ Staying in Westminster means a quick walk to Westminster Abbey, The House of Parliament, St. James Park, Winston Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms, and Buckingham Palace. Plus an extraordinary view of Beg Ben.

Fun Fact: Big Ben is the name of the clock IN the Tower and not the name for the iconic Tower itself.

21) A view of London from above.

They say the best view of London is the view from the Shard. But, you may want to also consider the view from the London Eye or the view from St. Paul’s Cathedral. All stunning views. Here you go, which one has your vote?

22) Don’t forget a walk in the park.

As you know, London is known for its green space. Take a stroll (or a jog) through these gorgeous parks. You won’t be alone.

  • Hyde Park ~ My favorite, I could spend hours in this park. Swimming, boating, riding horseback, or cycling. Or take a walk.
  • St. James Park ~ Grab a quick bite at Inn the Park in St. James Park on your way to “see” the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace. You can also catch a royal horse guard parade in St. James Park if you time it right.
  • Regents Park ~ Don’t miss the gardens of Regents Park, plus a lake, playground for the kids, and a vast outdoor sports area.
  • Greenwich Park ~ Complete your day of exploring Greenwich in the park, with views of the River Thames and the City of London. Greenwich Park is also home to the Royal Observatory, and several cafes.

23) Now grab a glass of Champagne and upload all of those photos of the day.

9 Travel Essentials for Your London Family Vacation.

1) The Herschel Backpack.

The Herschel Supply Company Iona Backpack in Camo has been my “Go-To” for almost two years for wherever we go; basketball games, out of town, or out of country travel.  If you don’t like camo, the backpack comes in multiple colors.

London Family Travel
Herschel camo backpack

The Herschel Backpack is lightweight and soft and holds lots of stuff, and when traveling with children, lots of stuff is given to mom!   It has a drawstring closure with a flap that has two straps that lock for added security.   The backpack is not too girly, so my husband will carry it also (so I don’t have to carry it all of the time).

2) Comfortable warm coat or parka.

Even though it was early spring when we traveled to London, it was still quite cold. The temperature ranged between 35-55 degrees F for the majority of the time, and it rained every day! You will need a good jacket, even a parka if you are uncomfortable in cold weather.

FamilyVacation London

3) Cell Phone Crossbody.

No one likes the pickpocketing shenanigans while traveling.  Be extra cautious in protecting your cell phone, cash, credit cards, and identification while on vacation.  I carry a backpack, which I know may encourage this behavior; however, what I carry in my backpack is easily replaceable.

The Rebecca Minkoff Cell Phone Cross Body is compact; however, it is large enough to hold all of the important goods mentioned above (leave your passport in the hotel room safe).  Wrap it around you and THEN put your coat on over the bag; no one would be able to grab it too easily.

4) Oyster Card.

We purchased an Oyster Card Online with the London Pass Travel Package before we left for London.  The Oyster card is a pre-paid electronic smartcard that provides access to the Tube (London Underground), buses, and trains, as well as the River Bus around central London.

Tap the Oyster Card on the reader at the entrance and again on your way out.  You can use the Oyster Card to ride an open-top double-decker bus ride (you only tap in with the bus rides).  If you run out of funds, there are machines in the tube stations to refurbish your account.

The London Underground is the quickest and most efficient way to maneuver around the city and is easy to navigate.  Having the card already in hand saves time and money.  It is about 50% cheaper than buying a paper Travelcard or single tickets with cash.  The card costs Five Pounds ($6.81), and you can add as much credit as you think you need for your travels.

5) A Stellar Camera.

The Canon EOS 80D is a replacement for my fifteen-year-old Canon EOS Rebel that I have used so much that the paint chipping off of it.  I will miss my old camera, but this new one is amazing.

Canon Products are easy to use for someone who is not a pro or a techy.  The camera makes pictures look pro; it is idiot-proof, I promise you that.  It goes EVERYWHERE with me.  The Cost of the Canon EOS 80D is about $1000, plus you will need accessories.

6) Travel Guides.

Walking allows you to experience the local vibe intimately; leisurely drop-in cafes, boutiques, and souvenir shops. Sit on a bench and people-watch. Your senses are more engaged with the sights, the feels, the smells, and the sounds.

7,8,9) Scarf, warm hat, and boots.
